IN 1810 GOVERNOR Lachlan
Macquarie commissioned contractors to design and build one
of Sydney’s earliest public buildings, The General Hospital,
in exchange for an exclusive licence to import rum - one of
the nation’s first Public Private Partnerships. Not everyone
took well to the building known as the Rum Hospital.
Following his arrival in 1814, Civil Architect Francis
Greenway informed Macquarie of the "ill-proportioned"
columns to the grand verandah, and of problems with the
foundations and roof structure. And by 1820 Commissioner
Bigge reported that the building was "in a state of rapid
decay", thereby raising questions about the success of the
delivery process.

Awards
: Emerging Green
Builders Design Competition Winners
The team of Gregory Thomson, Amit Price Patel and
Christine Scott, designers and planners at Goody Clancy
captured first place in the USGBC Emerging Green
Builders Design Competition, announced on November 11 at
GreenBuild. The competition included more than 130
entries, consisting of over 270 individual from 16
countries. The competition was open to students and
young professionals with three years or less experience
and required sustainable design of a building and site
that reached LEED Platinum level certification.

West Shopping Center
A high-end shopping center in Seoul, South Korea,
attracts customers with a flashy lighting scheme on the
outside featuring LEDs and a user-friendly control
system.
This structure is not just another pretty face in
fashionable dress—like the customers inside. The
lighting mechanics behind the kaleidoscopic fagade for
the Galleria West Shopping Center in Seoul, South Korea,
are one of a kind. Designed by UN Studio Architects,
with Rogier van der Heide of Arup Lighting, the
building's exterior is slowing traffic and passersby at
this busy intersection, and attracting visitors to the
high-end shops it houses.
