2001
AIA Honor Awards from Hong Kong Chapter of The American
Institute of Architects
|
| |
HONG
KONG, 30 October 2001 - AIA Hong Kong was
established in 1997 as an overseas chapter of The
American Institute of Architects to serve the
professional interests of over 125 U.S. trained
architects practising in Hong Kong - more than in any
other city outside the United States.
Each year, AIA Hong Kong recognizes design
excellence in architecture and interior design for works
completed by AIA member architects in Hong Kong, China
and the Asia Pacific Region. This year, a new category
was introduced for unbuilt design work. For the 2001
Design Awards Program, fifteen projects have been
selected as winners.
An international design
jury reviewed all the design submissions as unidentified
entries. This year's design jury comprised the following
distinguished architects: Prof. Eric K.C. Lye, OBE,
FRAIC, FHKIA, RIBA, HonRICS, HonAIA(HK), Director of
Studies (Architecture and Interior Design) of the
University of Hong Kong-SPACE and the jury chair; Paul
Katz, AIA, principal of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates
in New York; and Brian D. Lee, AIA, partner of
Skidmore Owings & Merrill in San Francisco. Tim
Nutt, HKIA AssocAIA, served as the professional adviser
to this year's design jury.

The design is
phase 1 of a 3-phased development. The massing
of
the building has a certain simplicity that is
striking, and the
presentation conveys the interior spatial
quality. |

It is
essentially a building with two different

The judges
feel this is the best submission in the
Interiors category. The project exhibits a
beautifully executed and serene interior. The
designer shows great skill in the integration of
material and lighting. This is a gracefully
scaled space with dramatic features. |

The
residential feel in this design belies the
overall sales pitch, it is successfully executed
in an otherwise ordinary office interior. |

Gensler

AMC
Festival Walk II Cinema Complex, Kowloon, Hong

The use of
materials and details demonstrate a great
understanding on the part of the designer for
this type of interior. The notion of the cinema
as a sort of visual playground is quite
successful. |

Shenzhen
MTR Depot and Headquarters Design Competition,
Shenzhen, China
The design
was a practical and elegant solution to an
important building type in this region. It
addresses issues of sustainability, movement and
work place in a strong architectonic manner.
There is an integration of siting, architectural
forms, engineering concepts and expression of
the façade. The concern for the environment was
also one of the features that especially
attracted the judges.

Sidener, FAIA
Central
California History Museum Design Competition,
Fresno, California, U.S.A.
This project
deserves recognition if only to remind us that
humor in drawings is an essential part of
architectural presentation. This project was a
beautifully drawn composition, not only the
designer¡|s skilled at communicating but also
the ideas themselves have a human touch and
scale to them, with an understanding of the
context and environment. The focus of this
design is on placemaking and not on style.

An
interesting and challenging proposal to a rather
conventional building type. This project creates
interesting interior and exterior spaces, a
sensitive use of material and scale, and an
exciting manipulation of form. |

To show the main academic building as a gateway
was a clever idea. We regret that this project
is unbuilt as the development could
reveal much more. |
