NEWS RELEASE

Hong Kong I 30 October 2001

2001 AIA Honor Awards from Hong Kong Chapter of The American Institute of Architects

HONG KONG, 30 October 2001 - AIA Hong Kong was established in 1997 as an overseas chapter of The American Institute of Architects to serve the professional interests of over 125 U.S. trained architects practising in Hong Kong - more than in any other city outside the United States.

Each year, AIA Hong Kong recognizes design excellence in architecture and interior design for works completed by AIA member architects in Hong Kong, China and the Asia Pacific Region. This year, a new category was introduced for unbuilt design work. For the 2001 Design Awards Program, fifteen projects have been selected as winners.

An international design jury reviewed all the design submissions as unidentified entries. This year's design jury comprised the following distinguished architects: Prof. Eric K.C. Lye, OBE, FRAIC, FHKIA, RIBA, HonRICS, HonAIA(HK), Director of Studies (Architecture and Interior Design) of the University of Hong Kong-SPACE and the jury chair; Paul Katz, AIA, principal of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in New York; and Brian D. Lee, AIA, partner of Skidmore Owings & Merrill in San Francisco. Tim Nutt, HKIA AssocAIA, served as the professional adviser to this year's design jury.

Merit Awards for Architecture
CL3 Architects Ltd.
Nike Inspired I, Bangkok, Thailand
The design has successfully unified a two-dimensional exterior with a three-dimensional interior.
Gensler International (HK) Ltd.
World Trade Center, Manilla, Philippines
The design is phase 1 of a 3-phased development. The massing of
the building has a certain simplicity that is striking, and the
presentation conveys the interior spatial quality.
HOK International (Asia/Pacific Ltd.)
Sendai International Airport Terminal, Sendai, Japan
This design continues a trend of well designed modern transportation facility, from Kansai in Japan to Chek Lap Kok in Hong Kong.
Nelson Chen Architects Ltd.
University of Hong Kong Art Gallery and Academic Offices, Pokfulam, Hong Kong
It is essentially a building with two different functions, built on a difficult site. The building parti was well resolved for the art gallery below ground.
Honor Award for Interiors
CL3 Architects Ltd.
Private Residence, Bangkok, Thailand.
The judges feel this is the best submission in the Interiors category. The project exhibits a beautifully executed and serene interior. The designer shows great skill in the integration of material and lighting. This is a gracefully scaled space with dramatic features.

Merit Awards for Interiors
Archasia Hong Kong Ltd.
DeLeo Residence, Hanoi, Vietnam
The project was well designed and detailed, using rich interior space and exuberant exterior details to create a continuity between the old and the new.

CL3 Architects Ltd.
Top Result Promotion Ltd. Office, Beijing, China
An elegant space designed with an economy of means, with a clever use of lighting.

CL3 Architects Ltd.
Investment Office, Shanghai, China
The residential feel in this design belies the overall sales pitch, it is successfully executed in an otherwise ordinary office interior.

Gensler International (HK) Ltd.
AMC Festival Walk II Cinema Complex, Kowloon, Hong Kong
The use of materials and details demonstrate a great understanding on the part of the designer for this type of interior. The notion of the cinema as a sort of visual playground is quite successful.

M. Moser Associates Ltd.
3i Asia Pacific Office, Central, Hong Kong
A thoughtful interior focused on using color to create visual excitement.

M. Moser Associates Ltd.
Bloomberg L.P. Office, Central, Hong Kong
This is a competent design for a hardworking environment.

Honor Award for Unbuilt Work

Integrated Design Associates Ltd.
Shenzhen MTR Depot and Headquarters Design Competition, Shenzhen, China
The design was a practical and elegant solution to an important building type in this region. It addresses issues of sustainability, movement and work place in a strong architectonic manner. There is an integration of siting, architectural forms, engineering concepts and expression of the façade. The concern for the environment was
also one of the features that especially attracted the judges.

 Merit Awards for Unbuilt Work

Jack T. Sidener, FAIA
Central California History Museum Design Competition, Fresno, California, U.S.A.
This project deserves recognition if only to remind us that humor in drawings is an essential part of architectural presentation. This project was a beautifully drawn composition, not only the designer¡|s skilled at communicating but also the ideas themselves have a human touch and scale to them, with an understanding of the
context and environment. The focus of this design is on placemaking and not on style.

Wang Weijen Architecture
Taipei University Student Dormitory, Phase 1, Taipei County, Taiwan
An interesting and challenging proposal to a rather conventional building type. This project creates interesting interior and exterior spaces, a sensitive use of material and scale, and an exciting manipulation of form.

Wang Weijen Architecture
Xian Jiaotong University Main Academic Building, Xian, Shaanxi, Province, China
To show the main academic building as a gateway was a clever idea. We regret that this project is unbuilt as the development could
reveal much more.

A public exhibition of all AIA Hong Kong Design Award entries will be on view at the Rotunda in Exchange Square, Hong Kong, from 14 to 24 November 2001, with an Awards Reception on Friday evening, 16 November 2001, at the exhibit venue.
