Holcim Awards Gold 2005
Design
for a Clan Settlement's Regeneration, Hangzhou, China
The innovation of the project is its critical, yet responsive
position relative to the issue of aging cities in China.
The scheme successfully demonstrates how new urban spaces can be
integrated within the texture of traditional neighborhoods without
wholesale demolition or replacement, thus raising awareness of the
importance of sustainability.

IN THE
ARCHITECTS WORDS
A competition-winning design for a new pedestrian/cycle bridge over
the Yarra river, as part of a public art project, in Melbourne’s
Docklands area. The brief called for the re-use of the remaining
sections of the Webb Dock Rail Bridge, in order to link the
Docklands on the north-side to the new residential developments on
the south-side.

2005 Awards for Excellence: Asia Pacific
In Sydney’s Walsh Bay, within the footprint of the former finger
wharf number 6/7, the development partnership built 140 luxury
condominiums, 387 parking spaces under the waterline, and 49 boat
moorings. The complex—the only known pier in the world purpose-built
for this use—is the crown jewel of the entire Walsh Bay development
district and is a model for creative reuse of the waterfront.

TURNING THE TOWER ON ITS SIDE,
BLIGH VOLLER NIELD’S NEW WATERFRONT HQ FOR THE NATIONAL AUSTRALIA
BANK PUTS AMENITY BEFORE STATUS AS IT HELPS BRING ABOUT WORKPLACE
CHANGE.
BEHIND EVERY WORK of architecture lies the somewhat vexed question
of property values, and the fact that good design always entails
some element of risk. When bankers are involved, their skills at
risk assessment may be so acutely applied that the role of the
architect is reduced to mere parody.

IN 1810 GOVERNOR Lachlan Macquarie
commissioned contractors to design and build one of Sydney’s
earliest public buildings, The General Hospital, in exchange for an
exclusive licence to import rum - one of the nation’s first Public
Private Partnerships. Not everyone took well to the building known
as the Rum Hospital. Following his arrival in 1814, Civil Architect
Francis Greenway informed Macquarie of the "ill-proportioned"
columns to the grand verandah, and of problems with the foundations
and roof structure. And by 1820 Commissioner Bigge reported that the
building was "in a state of rapid decay", thereby raising questions
about the success of the delivery process.

STEEL AWARD
HMAS Harman – DNOC
The new Defence Network
Operations Centre on HMAS Harman is an 80-metre-long,
essentially windowless building operating in high security
and partly hidden by sloping land. It could have been a
monstrous imposition on the landscape, but instead the use
of Colorbond on both roof and walls, with a tapered form and
muted palette, is cost-effective and elegant.

AWARD FOR
COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS
AURORA
PLACE, 88 PHILLIP STREET, SYDNEY (AMRO TOWER)
The Aurora Place office
building, on the corner of Phillip and Bent Streets, Sydney, makes a
significant contribution to the city on many levels.
In particular, the building challenges the traditional
planning proposition of an office tower sitting on a podium. The
smaller footprint at its base helps create an excellent piazza
between it and the residential tower. This is covered by an
expansive web-like glass canopy, providing shelter from the elements
for people using the cafes and alfresco dining areas.
